So...the Bible...if I want to read it, then I've got to have one, right?
Well, it helps. :) If you go to a bookstore to look for a Bible, you will see that there are several different types to choose from. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Arabic, and Greek. Obviously, I don't speak those languages, so I have to rely on a translated copy of the Bible. Different groups of people have translated the Bible over time. That's where all the different types of Bibles come from. Some people believe that only certain translations are "holy." I say, phooey. There are several types of Bibles that are perfectly accurate and "holy." If you'd like a full list to choose from, contact me.
If you don't have a Bible or you need a new one, PLEASE let me know. It would be my pleasure to get a Bible for you. I'm not really rich, so I can't promise you that it will be fancy, but it will be the version that I most prefer, and I will make sure that it is very useful for you.
Otherwise, I'm just going to tell you about my two favorites, because this is my blog. :)
New International Version (NIV)
This version of the Bible is written in the style of English that we speak today. For instance, it says "you" instead of "thou" and "did" instead of "didst." By using modern English, it helps me a lot. Now, believe it or not, there are even several different types of this version. I know, I know, it's overwhelming. However, the types simply have different purposes. There is a NIV Study Bible which has a lot of study notes with the scripture. There is a Women's Devotional NIV Bible. I've never opened one, so I don't know what's in it, but it's pink and frilly on the cover. :) There is a Children's NIV Bible, which has pictures and stories to help kids understand the Bible.
The type that I am really loving right now is called the NIV Quest Study Bible. It has all of the scripture, translated into easy English. However, in the margins, it has the 7,000 most frequently asked questions. There is also a keyword index to help you look up answers for certain topics. I really, really, really love this version, and I want to get one for myself soon. (Maybe for my birthday, honey?) Anyway, it's really helpful and easy to read, and that's what I like about it. You can get it pretty cheap with a hard cover. Or you can get it with a cool blue leather cover. Or you can get it with a tan and brown cover. Obviously, the cover is not important at all...just a personal style thing. :)
The other version of the Bible that I like is The Message. This version is written more like a story book with more modern language and slang. It's easy to read. The downside to this Bible is that it's hard to use for following a pastor or study. It's more like a novel.
Like I said, if you need a Bible, contact me. I will get a Bible for you. I promise.
Now, here's the really cool thing: Because of modern technology, the entire Bible is also available for free online. If there is a certain reason that you can't have an actual Bible in your possession, then you can access the Bible online. There are several different places. My favorite, however, is BibleGateway.com. This website has ALL sorts of Bibles for free online. Si usted habla español, BibleGateway.com tiene una biblia española. ( Y lo siento. My Spanish is REALLY rusty, so I did the best I could with what I could remember. If the grammar is really bad, please forgive me.)
There is even a free version that you can download onto your iPhone. I'm not kidding. It's called YouVersion. It's produced by lifechurch.tv. I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not sure how to use it, but I'm sure there are instructions on their website.
